Chapter Twenty-Two

AZA Pakistan, Ltd. Headquarters

Karachi, Pakistan

AZA Chairman Sajid smiled broadly as Jamshad was escorted into his office.

"Jamshad, my friend! Your timing is excellent! I was just about to have tea. Please, come and join me," Sajid said.

Jamshad's timing was a function of the appointment that Sajid's assistant had set with a phone call the day before.

But that didn't matter. Sajid's little performance had a purpose. To show Jamshad that Sajid regarded him as more than just another employee.

A friend, as Sajid had just called Jamshad?

No. Or, indeed, not what a Westerner would understand by the term.

Instead, someone that Sajid valued. Someone he trusted.

Soon, the familiar warm brew was in Jamshad's hands, and they both drank deeply.

"Jamshad, I've read all your reports, and I must say I'm very pleased with your progress. Now, all that remains is the weapons that will arm the submarines you've built," Sajid said.

Jamshad nodded but said nothing. He was obviously here to find out what the weapons were and, hopefully, how to obtain them. Why ask questions?

An approving smile from Sajid told Jamshad he'd passed another of his little tests.

"We will be appropriating these weapons from our own military. They are tactical nuclear warheads. Our technicians will be able to remove them from the missiles they currently arm. They will also prepare them for your use," Sajid said.

"How will we obtain these warheads?" Jamshad asked.

Instead of answering, Sajid rose and walked to his desk, where he unlocked a drawer and extracted a single slim folder.

After sitting back down across from Jamshad, Sajid withdrew a photo and put it on the table.

"The Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma," Jamshad said immediately. "Our air services division has a contract to maintain the Army's fleet of forty Pumas. We're always working on at least four, and sometimes many more."

Sajid nodded. "At the moment, we have five. Two have been brought to peak readiness and will carry the troops and equipment you'll need."

"With the greatest respect, sir, I must say I'm not happy about fighting our own soldiers to obtain these weapons. After all, they are manning weapons that defend our territory from Indian invasion. But if you have developed this plan, I suppose there was no alternative," Jamshad said.

To Jamshad's surprise, Sajid once again smiled approvingly.

"I would have been disappointed if you'd felt any other way," Sajid said. "But I have good news there. Our medical division has devised a method to incapacitate the soldiers guarding the missiles. It's a mixture of several chemicals used to force unconsciousness for surgery. Its only major drawback is that it won't be effective if winds are strong, but the forecast for the next several days is favorable."

Jamshad frowned. "I also recall that an anesthesiologist is present at surgery to administer those chemicals carefully. Isn't there a chance that these chemicals may kill some of the soldiers?"

"Yes, there is," Sajid said. "And there's a chance that some soldiers may escape the effects of the chemicals altogether. The security force accompanying you on this mission will then be forced to kill them before they can call for help.
